We have published a new course in our training portal for citizens titled “Data empowering research – How your health data is used in research“. The material, produced in the FinHITS project, aims to increase transparency in the use of health data and strengthen public trust in the secure processing of data.
The course explains, through practical examples, how data generated in social and health services can be used in research and other forms of secondary use. It complements the more detailed guidance available on our website about the secondary use of health and social data and supports the implementation of the European Health Data Space (EHDS) in the coming years.
Key contents
- What secondary use means: A clear overview of how social and health data are used in research
- Data protection and security: How the processing of data is monitored and how privacy is protected
- Individual rights: What rights individuals have regarding their data and how they can influence its use
- Benefits for society: How the use of data helps improve care, services and medical research
Support also for researchers and authorities
The course is also intended to support researchers, data controllers and public authorities. It provides a practical basis for explaining complex data protection issues and the principles of using data in a clear and accessible way to citizens.
Consistent communication is important so that citizens receive clear and up-to-date information about their rights and can trust that their data are handled securely.
The course is available in Finnish, English and Swedish. You can access it below.
