The Patient Data Repository is a centralised national database that stores patient records from both public and private healthcare providers in Finland.
The Patient Data Repository is part of the nationwide Kanta Services, managed by the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela).
All public healthcare providers have been connected to the Patient Data Repository since 2014, while private providers are required to use the repository if they maintain long-term electronic patient records.
When a healthcare professional records information in an electronic patient information system, it is automatically transferred to the Patient Data Repository. This ensures that up-to-date records are stored in one place, with uniform data standards.
