Register-based study on disease burden of bacterial meningitis, and long-term prognosis and resource use of invasive meningococcal disease in Finland

Meningitis and invasive meningococcal diseases (IMD) are very serious and can lead to complications with physical and mental disability or even death. We will study the incidence, etiology and risk factors in a population-based setting. We will evaluate both acute and long-term health care resource use and costs. We will also evaluate how the IMD impacted patients’ life: we will compare cases’ education, income and life cycle to individually-matched controls and to the siblings of the patients.
